Compassion Over Criminalization: Advocating for Unhoused Women in Crisis
Recently, a pregnant woman in active labor was cited for unlawful camping. This heartbreaking incident highlights the systemic challenges faced by unhoused individuals in our community, particularly women and children.
At UP for Women and Children, we believe no one should be left without options when seeking safety. As service providers on the front lines of this crisis, we know firsthand the power of compassionate, trauma-informed care in addressing homelessness. To prevent future tragedies, it is essential that our community prioritizes:
• Expanding shelter capacity to meet the growing demand.
• Increasing investments in supportive housing solutions.
• Ensuring protections for vulnerable populations, including pregnant women, those experiencing medical or mental health crises, and others who face systemic barriers.
We invite our community to take action by contacting local leaders and advocating for these critical changes. Together, we can work toward a more compassionate and effective approach to homelessness, ensuring dignity and safety for all.
